Coal occurrences and deposits of Ethiopia (Tables 1 & 8) were explored since the 1940s. Few coal occurrences were known to be intensively mined by the Italians in the years between 1937 and 1940. From the later dates up to 1983, the Geological Survey of Ethiopia and Addis Ababa University carried out some exploration work to locate and assess coal occurrences in the country.
After the establishment of the Ethiopian Institute of Geological Survey in 1983, the search for alternative low-grade fuels like coal and oil shale continued in different parts of the country to respond to the critical demand for energy and agricultural inputs. Coal deposits and occurrences in various parts of the country are reported (Tigist, 2007).
