Geology

Thick lignite beds hosted within the Ogwashi Formation. The lignite beds are part of an extensive lignite trend that parallels the current Atlantic coastline on the southern margin of Nigeria. Exploration: Geological mapping and core hole drilling (18 drill holes) have been carried out. Analysis indicates 2 major lignite beds (seams). Seam thickness is about 4m with depth to seam between 15-100m. The thermal and chemical quality of the lignite in this area is not known at this time, but similar lignite occurrences have been exploited in the Gulf Coast region of the United States for use as fuel in a number of electricity generating stations.
