Radical renewables, hydrogen ramp-up needed, coal energy transition day hears

A radical ramp-up of renewable energy and green hydrogen capacity will be needed by 2040 to take South Africa towards a net-zero climate change commitment, the Coal & Energy Transition Day heard on Wednesday. On the coal-fired power front, South Africa would from the 2040s/2045s need to have exited coal-fired power generation with the exception of this country’s two newest Kusile and Medupi power stations.
