ChromeSA on July 7 maintained that “destroying another industry” – referring to the majority of South Africa’s chrome ore producers – is “not a solution” to challenges faced by SaveSA Smelters, a group which represents individuals and companies negatively impacted by the current state of the South African ferrochrome sector. Commentary over the last few weeks from SaveSA Smelters indicates that the group’s position focusses on the demand that government immediately implement a proposed chrome ore export tax of between 20% and 80%, depending on the type of chrome ore being exported.
