The Sabodala gold project is situated in the Mako Mafic Volcanic Belt and lie within the west Birimian gold province, which is host to some of the world’s largest gold deposits. Sabodala is sited on a small hill of unweathered metabasalts. Locally, the volcanics are intruded by subvolcanic dolerite and gabbro sills and dykes, as well as quartz-feldspar porphyry and unfoliated rhyolite dykes. The gold mineralisation is associated with quartz, sericite, ankerite/siderite veining and orange-coloured silica-albite-carbonate-pyrite alteration. The main sulphide mineral is pyrite, although free gold does occur.

Project Owner:

Teranga Gold Corporation a Canadian based gold company owns 90% of the Sabodala concession while the government holds a 10% stake in the mine, and revenues generated are from taxes, royalties and dividends.

Project Status:

The Sabodala gold mine project is the only large scale gold mining operation in Senegal and it has been in operation since 2009. Multiple deposits feeding into central mill; owner-operated conventional truck and shovel open-pit mining.

As of December 2019 241,276 oz of gold has been mined.
