The mine is located on the Ashanti Volcanic Belt and the lithology is predominantly from the Biriman Supergroup. They originate from the mid-oceanic arcs of volcanoes, which formed a crust and collided with the West African Craton.

Gold mineralisation is found in the graphite-chlorite-sericite fault zones and are associated with carbonate and sulphide hydrothermal alteration.

Project Owners:

The redevelopment project is being operated by AngloGold Ashanti, who are Africa’s largest gold mining company.

Redevelopment officially launched in January 2019 after AngloGold Ashanti secured approval from the Ghanaian Government in June 2018.

Project Status:

The first phase of redevelopment involved mine rehabilitation and the refurbishment of parts of the processing plant. The second phase involves refurbishing the shaft, ventilation and underground material handlings system. An upgrade of the processing plant is also proposed, in order to double processing capacity. The upgrade will involve the installation of a new primary crusher,  semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and a ball mill circuit, a carbon regeneration facility, a new tailings storage facility and a new gold room.
